Hypermiling. Fad or Future?
See what the hype is all about!
The term hypermiling is slowly making its way to Australia, although the concept is not new. Hypermiling is simply altering the way you drive your car to maximise its fuel efficiency. This allows you to save at the pump while helping the environment.
The term was coined by Wayne Gerdes, a former nuclear plant engineer in the US, who began using fuel saving techniques after September 11 raised his awareness of the US dependence on oil form the Middle East.
Hypermiling has become a contentious issue due to some of the techniques used to save fuel. These include tailgating, running red lights to avoid stopping and driving too slowly. Some people in the US are resorting to taking out their rear seats to lighten the load!
While some have labelled hypermiling a “fad” others believe that increasing a driver’s awareness of how to reduce the car’s fuel consumption is just about education and something that everybody should do in the future. Studies have shown that by employing the following techniques, you can reduce your fuel consumption by up to 25%.
Tips for Hypermiling. (always put safety first)
1. Accelerate and brake smoothly
2. Use air conditioning sparingly
3. Keep your tyres at the right pressure
4. Regularly service your car
5. Don’t leave your engine idling for long periods
6. Drive at the speed limit (or slightly under)
7. Travel light
8. Plan your trips-avoid peak hour
