BMW Drives Low Emission Motoring

A new report from BMW in the UK reveals that while eco-conscious motorists are moving towards low emission cars, the drive experience and running costs are still more important than saving the planet.

The report, Driving Change, which gathered the views of 2,068 motorists, claims that the increase in sales of lower emission cars is more driven by the fact that such cars will be kinder to the wallet.

Three quarters of motorists would purchase a lower-emissions car only if it saved them money.  …only 13 per cent cited reduced emissions as the key motive.

Richard Hudson, Marketing Director for BMW UK, said: “This report has provided tremendous insights in to the honest motivations for today’s consumers.  It’s all very well to offer more efficient products, but unless the quality and performance also progress, they simply won’t sell.”

When quizzed about which areas of their lives people thought offered the greatest opportunity for reducing carbon foot print, over a quarter of respondents, 26%, rated driving as a key. That’s higher than for any other area (shopping, property, entertainment). One in five people now cite carbon footprint as their chief consideration when buying a new car.
The report suggests this mindset is led by women: 25% cite carbon footprint as the most important factor when buying a car, compared with just 15% of men.
